From the traditional media planners to our digital buyers, you’ll gain insight into the many levels that make up Media Works Ltd. This week we interviewed Jenn Etzel.

How long have you been working in media/ advertising?

After I graduated in 2014 I had an internship in Washington, DC with a PR firm. After realizing that PR was not the direction I wanted to take I came to Media Works in November 2014 so it has been about 10 months. It is crazy to think that I will have been at Media Works for 1 year in November!

Can you describe a day in your life at Media Works?

Very busy! Each day is a little different which I enjoy. Since most of my time at Media Works has been spent as an assistant there was a lot of invoicing. I am also constantly using Facebook, setting up campaigns and pulling reports. Now that I am making the transition from assistant to buyer I spend a lot of time learning and asking a million questions. This could be anywhere from the traditional buying or how to set up campaigns in Google Adwords.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I am not sure about when I was very young, but during my middle school and early high school years I wanted to be a detective like Benson and Stabler on Law & Order SVU. I then realized that I would have to pay my dues and be a Police Officer for a long time so that idea quickly went away. Then I thought I wanted to be a news anchor, and of course I wanted to go big and work for the Today`s Show. I think secretly I just wanted to be famous…

What are some of the challenges of your position?

Since I work on a lot of digital accounts one of the main challenges is that the digital world is constantly changing, and we are always having to relearn how to use a particular platform or inform a client about a new feature that is now available.

What’s your all-time favorite ad campaign? What made it special?

One campaign that really sticks out to me is the Dove Real Beauty campaign. It was a campaign we had discussed in multiple marketing classes in college. Today there are so many different ideas of what “real beauty” is and what makes a women beautiful. With the media shaping everyone`s minds it is easy to get sucked in, but I think that the Dove Real Beauty campaign was able to bring some life and realness back into the media and start a conversation that many people feel passionate about.

Name one Medium you use every day that you couldn’t live without.

Although I think I use about every social media app available I think I would have to say Instagram. I love the idea of staying connected to people through pictures. Since I no longer print pictures, Instagram serves as a digital photo album for me where I am able to share images with hundreds of people instantly. I also love that it connects you to so many people maybe even those you haven’t kept in close touch with.

Name a unique quality or talent that you bring to Media Works, and why it makes you an integral part of the MW Team.

Being a college athlete I have learned how to work with a lot of different people who have a wide variety of personalities and abilities. At Media Works there are some people who are trained in mainly traditional media buying, some who are strictly digital and others who are a little mix of both. This was the same on the lacrosse field. Each person had their particular strengths and weaknesses and we needed to use everyone to reach our goal. As with any company there is also a wide variety of personalities. I think that being a part of a team for virtually my entire life has helped me to be able to get along with anyone I am working with.
